Ισοφάρισε το ρεκόρ του Αγκάσι ο Αλκαράθ με την πρόκριση στους «8» του US Open

Ο Κάρλος Αλκαράθ έπαιξε όσο ακριβώς χρειαζόταν για να πάρει την «καθαρή» νίκη με 3-0 σετ επί του Ματέο Αρνάλντι και ταυτόχρονα το «εισιτήριο» για τους προημιτελικούς του US Open, στο οποίο φιλοδοξεί να κάνει το back to back για πρώτη φορά μετά το 2008, όταν τότε ο Ρότζερ Φέντερερ έκανε το 2Χ2 στη Νέα Υόρκη. 

Ο Ισπανός κάτοχος του τίτλου μετρά, πλέον, 15 νίκες και μόλις μία ήττα στη Νέα Υόρκη. Χρειάστηκε κάτι λιγότερο από 2 ώρες αγώνα (1:59΄΄) για να κάμψει την αντίσταση του Ιταλού και να γίνει ο δεύτερος τενίστας στην Open Era εποχή (από το 1968) που φτάνει για τρίτη διαδοδική χρονιά στην φάση των «8» σε ηλικία κάτων των 21 ετών, ισοφαρίζοντας το ρεκόρ του Αντρέ Αγκασι.

Ο 22χρονος Αρνάλντι πάλεψε με όλες τις δυνάμεις του, αλλά δεν μπόρεσε να κάνει άλλη μία υπέρβαση. Έφτασε στον 4ο γύρο ενός major τουρνουά για πρώτη φορά στην καριέρα του.

Στον επόμενο γύρο ο Αλκαράθ θα τεθεί αντιμέτωπος με το νικητή του αγώνα ανάμεσα στον Αλεξάντερ Ζβέρεφ και στον Γιανίκ Σίνερ.
